Privacy Policy

Introduction
Multi-plex ("we," "us," or "our") operates a browser-based watch-together platform that lets users create rooms, invite friends, and watch video in real-time sync. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how it is used when you access our service at multiplex.watch.
We designed Multi-plex to be minimally invasive. No account is required. We do not sell your data. We do not run advertising. We collect only what is necessary to operate the service.
Information We Collect
We collect the following information when you use Multi-plex:
- Display name — the name you choose when joining or creating a room. This is visible to other users in the same room.
- Avatar color — the color you select for your avatar. Stored locally in your browser and used for room display purposes only.
- Room codes — the 6-character codes used to identify rooms you create or join. Room codes are ephemeral and tied to a session.
- IP address — collected automatically by our servers to enable WebSocket connections for playback synchronization and to prevent abuse. Not linked to any persistent identity.
- Playback state — the current video URL, playback position, and play/pause state shared within a room. This data exists only for the lifetime of the room session.
- Chat messages — messages you send inside a room are relayed to other room participants in real time and are not stored beyond the session.
We do not collect email addresses, names, phone numbers, or payment information unless you voluntarily subscribe to our newsletter, in which case only your email address is stored.
How We Use Your Information
The information we collect is used exclusively to operate the Multi-plex service:
- To create and maintain room sessions for synchronised playback.
- To relay play, pause, seek, and chat events to other participants in real time via WebSockets.
- To display your chosen name and avatar color to other users in the same room.
- To identify your connection for synchronisation purposes (IP address).
- To send newsletter emails if you have subscribed (email address only, used solely for this purpose).
We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or sale to third parties under any circumstances.
Data Retention
Multi-plex is designed around ephemeral sessions. Room data — including video state, chat messages, and participant information — is held in server memory only for the duration of the room session and is automatically discarded when a room has been inactive for 24 hours.
IP addresses are retained in server logs for up to 7 days for abuse-prevention purposes and are then automatically purged.
If you subscribed to our newsletter, your email address is retained until you unsubscribe. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email we send you.
We do not maintain a persistent user database. There is no "account" to delete because no account is created.
Third-Party Services
Multi-plex uses a small number of third-party services:
- Google Fonts — used to load the Barlow and Barlow Condensed typefaces. Google may log font requests including your IP address; see Google's Privacy Policy for details.
- Infrastructure provider — our servers are hosted with a cloud provider. Data in transit is encrypted via TLS. We do not share your data with our hosting provider beyond what is technically necessary to operate the service.
We do not use analytics trackers, advertising networks, social media pixels, session-recording tools, or any other third-party tracking scripts.
Your Rights
Because Multi-plex collects minimal data and most of it is session-ephemeral, your primary right is already automatically exercised: room data expires within 24 hours of inactivity.
If you subscribed to our newsletter and wish to be removed, use the unsubscribe link in any email. You may also contact us directly to request removal.
If you believe we hold personal data about you and wish to enquire, access it, or request deletion, please contact us at the address below. We will respond within 30 days.
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights under GDPR, CCPA, or other applicable privacy legislation. We respect these rights and will fulfil valid requests in accordance with applicable law.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. If the changes are material, we will make reasonable efforts to notify users (for example, via a notice on the home page or in the newsletter if applicable).
Continued use of Multi-plex after changes become effective constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
